Rostelecom Ekaterinburg-1 is a newly launched 2MW data center located in Yekaterinburg, Russia, strategically positioned within the Ural federal district to address regional digital infrastructure demands. Initially equipped with 216 racks in April 2023, the facility is set to expand with an additional 216 racks by 2024, reaching a total capacity of 432 racks. This expansion supports Rostelecom’s broader strategy to decentralize data center resources, which have historically been concentrated in Moscow and St. Petersburg, and reduce regional digital disparities.
As part of Rostelecom’s growing network, the Yekaterinburg facility complements existing sites in nearby cities like Tyumen, Chelyabinsk, Surgut, and Kurgan, enhancing coverage across the Urals and Siberia. Pavel Kaplunov, VP for Cloud Services at Rostelecom, emphasized the project’s role in meeting rising demand for localized, reliable cloud and colocation services, noting that customer equipment deployment will begin shortly after the site’s commercial launch. Designed to serve corporate and government clients, the data center aims to bolster regional connectivity, disaster recovery capabilities, and access to low-latency digital solutions, positioning the Urals as a key hub for Russia’s expanding digital economy.
