The city council of Abrantes, Portugal has approved €16.2 million in tax exemptions to support the development of a new data center in Pego. The project, led by EDC One, aims to transform a former solar panel factory site near the decommissioned Pego coal plant into a major digital infrastructure hub.
EDC One, a recently restructured company now focused on data center development, plans to invest up to €7 billion by 2030. The initiative is seen as a strategic effort to revitalize the local economy and repurpose inactive industrial land.
The tax incentives, covering IMI, IMT, and Derrama, will only be activated if the investment proceeds. The project still requires final government approvals, but local officials have called it a “project of national interest” with potential to reshape the region’s economic landscape.
