Amazon AWS AKL - Westgate

This data center, codenamed Project Wētā during development, is under construction by Amazon Web Services (AWS) in Westgate, Auckland, New Zealand. The 3.9-hectare site is located near the Costco and Westgate shopping center.

Public records associated with the development process, initiated in March 2020, detail plans for earthworks, contaminant discharge from the soil, and potential noise limit exceedances during construction. The development also involves the drainage of two man-made wetland features previously used for goldfish breeding. These features are not classified as natural wetlands and are therefore not protected under New Zealand's National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management.

An assessment of the project's environmental effects, prepared for Amazon by engineering firm Aurecon, was reviewed by conservation groups. While the report identified the presence of at-risk copper skinks within 650 meters of the site, these were not found on the Amazon property itself. The consultation process did not raise any immediate environmental concerns from the conservation groups involved.
