MIX - Malawi Internet Exchange

The Malawi Internet Exchange (MIX) is a crucial initiative operated by the Malawi Internet Service Providers' Association (MISPA). Located at the College of Medicine in Blantyre, the MIX was established with the assistance of KTH of Sweden and became operational on December 4, 2008. The primary goal of the MIX is to keep local internet traffic within the country, thereby improving connectivity, efficiency, and security for national data and transactions.

By conserving upstream bandwidth, which was previously reliant on expensive VSAT links, the MIX has significantly enhanced internet services in Malawi. It has also facilitated better access to online services, such as banking, and has been instrumental in the development of the country's internet infrastructure. The MIX continues to grow, with various ISPs and organizations joining to peer and contribute to the exchange.
