Interconnection
The Hawaii Internet Exchange (HIX) is a neutral, non-profit Internet Exchange Point (IXP) based in Hawaii. It facilitates direct interconnections between various networks, including government, education, and research network providers located in the state. HIX operates two peering points: one at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa campus and the other at the DRFortress Data Center near the Honolulu Airport.
HIX aims to improve network performance, reduce latency, and enhance the resilience of internet services by keeping traffic local. Membership is open to eligible network providers, and there are no charges for establishing peering connections, although participants are responsible for their own circuit and colocation costs.
