The Guam Open Research & Education eXchange (GOREX) is an initiative by the University of Guam to leverage Guam's strategic geographic location and the new fiber optic systems landing there. GOREX aims to establish an open research and education exchange to interconnect existing and planned high-capacity trans-Pacific circuits. This initiative enhances Pacific-wide transport diversity and resilience, supporting global research and education networks and facilitating greater access for Pacific Island nations and communities.
GOREX connects Guam to Hawaii and California via the SEA-US fiber-optic submarine cable, enabling ultra-high-speed data exchanges. This network supports the University of Guam's research centers, such as the Marine Laboratory and the Water Environmental Research Institute, by allowing the exchange and analysis of large scientific datasets. The overarching goal is to promote the growth and effectiveness of data-intensive and collaborative research and education activities in the Asia-Pacific region.
