EVIX - Experimental Virtual Internet Exchange

The Experimental Virtual Internet Exchange (EVIX) is a unique platform designed to support the next generation of network engineers. Unlike traditional internet exchanges, which can be prohibitively expensive and typically cater to businesses, EVIX offers a cost-effective solution for hobbyists and enthusiasts. By providing a virtual environment that mimics real-world internet exchanges, EVIX allows its members to gain hands-on experience with networking technologies and protocols at almost no cost.

EVIX operates by enabling multiple Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and networks to connect through a single virtual exchange point. This setup simplifies the process of establishing direct connections between numerous ISPs, which would otherwise be complex and costly. Members can learn and experiment with various connection types, such as Virtual Extensible LAN (VXLAN), Ethernet over IP (EoIP), OpenVPN, and ZeroTier, among others.

The platform is built on robust technologies, including HTML5, SCSS, OpenLiteSpeed, and Ubuntu Server. Automation scripts are primarily written in Bash, JQ, Python, and PHP, with MySQL used for peer information and monitoring. EVIX also leverages tools like LibreNMS and SmokePing for monitoring, and Ansible for deploying new scripts and configurations.

EVIX's mission is to lower the barriers to entry for aspiring network engineers, providing them with valuable skills and experience that can be directly applied to future careers. The platform is maintained by a dedicated team of volunteers who manage technical operations, software development, and public relations, ensuring that EVIX remains a valuable resource for its community.
