The company was founded 22 years ago as a subsidiary of the Dortmunder Stadtwerke (DSW21). The connection area of DOKOM21 includes besides Dortmund the cities Hagen, Herdecke, Holzwickede, Werl, Essen and Unna as well as Halver, Iserlohn, Kierspe, Lüdenscheid, Meinerzhagen, Menden, Altena, Plettenberg, Werdohl, Hemer, Herscheid and Schalksmühle in Märkischer Kreis.

The services range from telephone connections, Internet access via Voice-over-IP solutions and leased lines for location networking to cable TV and mobile communications. In addition, the offering includes online backup and data center services as well as multimedia services for the housing industry.
