Blackpool Council is spearheading a transformative project with the development of 'Silicon Sands,' a high-performance data center campus. This ambitious initiative is set to be located at the Blackpool Airport Enterprise Zone, encompassing a vast 40-acre site. The centerpiece of this development is a 15,000 sq ft data center, featuring a 6,000 sq ft ground floor data hall, complemented by office and research spaces above.
The 'Silicon Sands' project is poised to become a cornerstone of technological advancement and economic growth for Blackpool. It promises to attract significant inward investment by leveraging the town's strategic assets, including the Celtix-Connect2 internet cable, which is part of the North Atlantic Loop carrying a substantial portion of global internet traffic. This connectivity, combined with renewable power supplies and available land, positions Blackpool as an attractive hub for high-performance sectors like AI, telehealth, advanced manufacturing, and gaming.
Moreover, the council's vision extends to creating a sustainable and energy-efficient infrastructure. The data center will be powered by at least 50MVA of renewable energy, potentially supplemented by a solar farm. Innovations such as liquid immersion cooling technologies are also being considered to enhance energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact. These forward-thinking approaches underscore Blackpool Council's commitment to not only fostering a new digital revolution in the region but also to doing so in an environmentally responsible manner.
